Microsoft was convicted on 8 counts by Jackson, 7 of which were upheld on appeal. So yes, Microsoft were convicted of breaching anti-trust law; they were never acquitted of any of the counts on which Jackson convicted them.

In the strange way US courts work, MS was able to negotiate its own remedy. MS knew that a few billion in lawyer fees could outlast the states and DoJ eventually - they just needed to stay in court as long as they could. Ultimately the states and DoJ, even though on paper they had a resounding victory, gave up the fight with barely a whimper.

So the fact that the ultimate remedy was insignificant is more an inditement of the US justice system than a fillip for the honesty or integrity of Microsoft.
