Microsoft was "convicted" on some counts...
... of the anti-trust case and negotiated a settlement with the Justice Department. The settlement needed approval by the Judge and by the States which had also sued.

Some States were not satisfied, but after the Appeals Court also approved the settlement, every State dropped the case, except Massachusetts.
If the name sounds familiar, it's because MA is also the State that grandstanded resoundingly in setting formats for retaining documents. Microsoft was finally excluded.
