The publisher doesn't make the ton of money you say. It is the retailer or the college bookstore that is gouging you. Those profits go back to the scholarship fund. Since you are a captive audience you will get hosed. Professors submit a book list and only the bookstore will have the current version of it. At least if they are in mint condition, you can return them on a 50% loss and they still made money.
