Open Source is only a check and balance.

For many years, knowledge could only be obtained through many years of mentoring, live experience, checking out several books from the library, and attending many colleges.

Now because of the information age and opensource, science is able to spin out of control and counter proprietary sources which have been holding back knowledge from the masses.

Wikis have the advantage of being checked by many more eyes and corrected far more often than books. If some one defaces a page, I am certain that many would be ready to step in and fix the errors.

Text books fail miserably in this matter. I found my brother using the same version of my algebra book that I used back in school. I remember the teacher correcting mistakes from the book way back then, and yet they still use that same release.

I love the idea of free knowledge, and giving everyone with a internet terminal the ability to learn. For this very reason, I spend an enormous amount of time on Wikipedia.

I do pity those who are in the market of education, but hope that they have the ability to adapt, or offer something that the internet can't.
