Application hosting...: ...OK, that'll work for some applications, Office being mentioned. What about more specialized ones, say, IDL or Matlab (I'm a scientific user). How would this work? When I launch one of these programs, there is a constant interplay between the main program and calls to various libraries stored locally, perhaps residing in memory and/or swap space. Would these be hosted at Google, then downloaded only when I run an application, perhaps with a meter running in the background? Who tends the meter? How would billing work, and what are the grievance procedures if I have a complaint? Will hard copy bills be sent out via snail mail, or will everything be handled over the network?

I'm a great fan of Google - Google Earth is absolutely awesome - but it's not clear how many applications there are currently being used would be able to work in an application-hosting environment in a manner that is amenable to me and the way users work. There will certainly be changes in the overall work environment, but finding out what works and what doesn't will involve some trial and error. The present desktop paradigm has an advantage here in that it is known to work, not perfectly perhaps, but more than adequately. These are questions I would imagine all users will be asking. There's also the matter of requiring a high speed connection to the internet. Although for those who enjoy such connectivity and may perhaps have come to take it for granted, perhaps not ever knowing otherwise, this may seem like a given.
