Nobody's calling it sinister, but...
A true artist finds gratification enough in the fact that people are exposed to their art and appreciate it.

I'm not trying to judge the greatness of any artist, but it does diminish one's artistic credibility when they actively try to conceal their art from the general public to protect their bottom line.
