Opera and Firefox start from scratch.
Half (that's an uneducated guess) of Internet Explorer's components is already running when you click on IE's icon - that is not the case for Firefox and Opera, as they're not integrated with Windows. The advantage for IE is that it may start up faster, but we all know about the disadvantages. Besides, Opera and Firefox give you a faster internet experience, as you can do many more things more easily. Think of mouse gestures, customizable keyboard shortcuts, context menus and toolbar lay-outs. Think of quick access to bookmarks, stored sessions etc.
