- Boredom or MS's stagnation?
-
"His alternatives for why anyone would switch from IE are boredom (IE not updated for a long time) and security (which he acknowledges has not motivated many; he expects governments to push the issue)."
Don't you agree that MS has lagged so far behind in the browser war? No major updates or upgrades to a browser that runs on 90% of the world's PCs for 5 years, thats the zenith of stagnation of any kind! Look at Opera, Safari, and Firefox; in spite of having a small share, they have been very innovative and secure browsers (I hope you have tried them). Should MS be allowed to get away with it? Ofcourse with MS pleasers like you or for the masses of users who don't want to ramp up on another learning curve, that doesn't seem to be a problem. For users like my parents who still used to think that the "e" on the screen stands for Internet, ignorance is the primary reason for not shifting to alternative browsers (though, I did manage to convince them that "O" stands for the Internet and we now agree on that). Preinstalling the browser on the OS doesn't do any favors to the other browsers too, but no one can blame MS for that since they own both the OS and the browser. Regarding Mr. Tetzchner's comment on governments, I guess that was meant to be tongue-in-cheek! Conformance to open standards may not necessarily be the primary reason for a shift to alternative browsers, but more options and flexibility may be (simply download Opera version 8.02 or Firefox 1.0.6 and you will know why). Anton, the primary reasons why people don't want to shift to the alternative browsers are ignorance, incompatibility of some Web sites (our University website is optimized for Firefox and IE, but not for Opera), and the sheer lack of motivation of most users to learn a better software.
"Not many people care enough about using computers that they have principles about code which they do not see."
Agreed due to the reasons mentioned above, but the more critical aspect is whether MS really cares about its users. Why has MS not provided any upgrades earlier for software that has been predominantly used for browsing for 5 years? Most people won't care what browser they use for surfing, but these are the only people who are the most vulnerable due IE flaws and attacks on IE. - Posted by: archnova79 Posted on: 09/08/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
