To (hopefully) put this to a rest
First, you're not gaining any credibility by quoting ZDNet. I don't necessarily agree with the reporter's opinion. Second, allow me to clarify:

Google is not a competitor to Microsoft in the way that Novel or Apple (operating systems) are. Google is also not a competitor to Microsoft in the way that Corel or Sun (office suites) are. Furthermore, Google is not a competitor to Microsoft in the way IBM (enterprise communications etc.) or Oracle/MySQL (DB systems) are. Notice all of those areas generate revenue.

Web-based distributed application service is an emerging market that has an uncertain future. We can attempt to base our predicitons for its success on the amount of capital corporations are investing in the field, but that is harldy a reliable barometer.

Look, the tag line on this web site is, "Where business meets technology." I was attempting to look at this dichotomy from a business perspective. I simply disagree with DonnieBoy's opinion of how the field will play out, and the relationship between MS and Google.

I'm not sure what else I can say to clarify my position. Feel free to disagree.
