Deterrence from leaving versus incentive to stay
It's very telling that Microsoft is finding it more expedient than it once did to deter its employees from leaving, using noncompete and nondisclosure agreements, than enticing them to stay by staying at the top of its game.

Google seems to be offering scientists not only excellent rewards for joining, but a better place to work. To go by what this case is revealing about both companies, it appears less mired in power struggles and more geared towards the future in every respect - from international business relations to the public face of the company to keeping its people happy.
