Gates (not the Bill kind)
I'm not sure if opening up Google Talk is a value for people using other services or not. Certainly, AIM users don't lack for people to IM with. The benefit for Google would be the ability to let users talk to users of other systems (who are much more numerous at this point). One thing I haven't factored in here is cell phones. I find it curious that you can sign up for a Gmail account via cell phone but not via the Web. Is it possible that we'll see Google Talk on cell phones soon?

At the corporate level, Google Talk offers a more refined population of people to IM with because of its closed gate nature. But for corporate use, I would imagine that Google would need to add, at the very least, file sharing and group chats. (I think presentation capability would be another plus, but I don't know if they want to turn Google Talk into a WebEx competitor.)
