I'm sure you raise a very valid point, bhartman33.

Having never bothered with an IM service before, the problems of interoperability don't affect me.

And, I'm using this primarily as a business tool so I'm simply "inviting" my employees and contractors to open a Gmail account, etc. So, I've had someone else to Google Talk with from the time I opened my own account.

I think for those using other IM services, the ability to break through the locked gates would surely be of value -- as long as it doesn't adversely affect the simple beauty of Google Talk.
