Told you so
Just like the VCR, you have the media companies being scared of
a new technology, then they declare it will destroy their
business, then they take every legal manuever possible to drive
it out of existence, then they eventually wise up and adapt their
business model to take advantage of it, and make lots and lots
of money.

The problem here is that as planned, these networks don't offer
any distinct advantage to the user, other than that they're legal.
But if you're going to pay for the song, why go through all the
hassle of a p2p network, with iTunes right there being so much
simpler and easier?

My suggestions on how to make this really work:

1) offer things not available from iTunes or any of the other
music stores--music that they don't carry, and more
importantly, other file formats, like OGG or AIFF.

2) offer the user an incentive to use your network--something
like the Weed network, where every time someone downloads a
song from you and pays for it, you get a cut of that purchase
price. This gives the user a financial incentive to use the
network.
