Yes, it really is. So long as the value of the oil is greater than the cost to extract it, we will continue doing so. We could stop extracting oil before the point where we need to put more energy resources into extraction than we would get out, because energy isn't the only resource that needs to be considered as an input. The use of steel, labor, technology, etc all have costs, and the market essentially solves a giant matrix equation for us. It is even possible that we would continue extracting oil after the energy value is less than what we consume to retrieve it. For example, to make medicine, plastics, or something else. It all depends on the pricing of everythign involved.
