It is a conundrum
Why isn't ICANN considered to be multinational?

Its a bit like paper money - its all about perception and two different streams of perception at that.

Internationally there is an understanding by those intimately involved (local net registrars and the like) that ICANN is reasonably repsentative, but beyond that there can be a confused perception that things like Root Servers (over which the US recently re-asserted their control) and ICANN are all part of the same deal - which they aint.

Let us be honest with each other Carl - the US (at time unfairly but sometimes justly) has an image problem in the global community right now and being big means being highly visible. The US presidency is not called "the most powerful job in the world" for no reason.
This calls for a little subtlty - and sometimes that is lacking.

This leads on to the second stream of perception - inside the US itself. Due to an almost hegemonic reach of media you guys are reallllly visible to the rest of us. Individuals of almost any nation know way more about the internal goings on within the US than vice versa. Right now what we see is the deep divisions running through US society, not debate type divsions but chasm rift type divisions. Within those divisions you get some extreme views that, given the media reach mentioned a moment ago, everybody gets to see.
So when a Jeff Spicoli or No_Axe scrap it out, it is done in front of a global audience.
Combine this with the aforementioned division and what you get is:
One US guy says RED
Other US guy says GREEN just because first guy said RED.

Goggle-eyed international viewers say "wow, is it red or is it green?" and a whole red/green debate gets going globally because 2 US guys can't stand each other.

OK...........way oversimplified and exaggerated but I stand by the core of it.

You guys have lost your consensus and everytime you argue based on ideology (which is a perfect right) you are doing it in front of the neighbours.

Completely unsolicited advice? - get rid of media spin, debate on the facts and not the "issues" and leave room for dissenting opinion - ie just cos someone disagrees on one subject doesnt mean you can define them as a person based on it.

wandered way off topic - sorry
