I think I'm beginning to understand

The apparent contradiciton does have a purpose. On the one hand, people are complaining that ICANN can unilaterally make decisions about Internet domains. On the other hand, people are complaining that the Bush administration, as a proxy for right-wing Christians, is unilaterally interfering with ICANN. See the connection? There are two clues hidden there.

The first clue is that it's ICANN and the Bush administration - both US-based (although ICANN has international input, that's not a consideration). Both parties are wrong - neither should be allowed to make unilateral decisions. There should be a "neutral" third party to make these decisions, taking the whole world into account. Got it? The UN. This is just a push to have the UN take over the Internet.

The second clue is in the use of the term "right-wing". This is just another assault on Christians, in the guise of maintaining freedom. Anything the Bush administration supports is unquestionably an agenda of right-wing Christians. It doesn't matter if anyone else in the world supports it also; if the Bush administration supports it, it must be Christian and therefore wrong.

People give their own clues to their agendas.
