" STILL somehow fail to fathom how MY credit report is not something I have free access to."
Keep this in mind always, personal information is the coin of the realm. Enough information garnered on enough people is worth more than all the gold in Fort Knox. There is not a court in the US that will say your information is just that, YOURS.
Wanna know why? Wellhhelll let me tell you why. Because you could then charge these agencies a fair use fee. I don't have the court cases at hand to cite, but it was reasoned by some clown judge in a lawsuit addressing just that, that the agency spent their time and money to collect the data from free public records thus they are allowed to charge you and others for the information. The 3 credit agencies where deemed necessary to establish a bench mark for granting loans.
"Can I see my medical records?"
Oddly enough by law the answer is no. There is legislation going through several states to change that. Wanna know who is blocking that legislation? Insurance companies.
"Can I see my military records?"
Yes you can

Basically you will receive a "Report of Separation"
A Report of Separation is generally issued when a service member performs active duty or at least 90 consecutive days of active duty training. The Report of Separation contains information normally needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans' organizations. Information shown on the Report of Separation may include the service member's:
Date and place of entry into active duty
Home address at time of entry
Date and place of release from active duty
Home address after separation
Last duty assignment and rank
Military job specialty
Military education
Decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign awards
Total creditable service
Foreign service credited
Separation information (type of separation, character of service, authority and reason for separation, separation and reenlistment eligibility codes)
"Can I see my tax records?"

You can also request information about yourself using the Freedom of Information Act by addressing the agency you were involved with directly.

There is a cost associated. You can more information about your military records by going this route. You also have to ask for all records, communications, discussions etc. Be prepared for blackedout info.
You may also request a FBI Identification Record of yourself from the FBI. $18.00

You may also request all FBI records on yourself under the freedom of information act. This costs bigggg bucks.
