But doesn't competition fix that? My view is that in competitive search markets, nobody deliberately returns suboptimal results because they all too frightened to lose market share.

So if you're stuck with 2 main players, its better to use the one you trust, but if you've got 10 players, you just use whoever's results are best at the moment because you can trust them all.

Many of those smaller engines are way underrated so I think its great that Newscorp are looking to buy an engine rather than license G/Y results like so many other sites. If they wanted to write one, I'd bung in my CV because I think there's new ways of doing this, but buying one of the smaller guys is a pretty good option.
