Greed and fear
Remember though, that this whole project is being driven by
fear and greed. Fear, because the book publishers feel like
they're missing out on something just because e-book
technology is available and they're not doing something with it
and maybe somebody else will. Fear then drives the insane
restrictions and DRM. Greed comes into it because they realize
that the production costs are nil, yet they still want to charge
close to full price (plus there's the idea of making you re-buy the
book every year).

Once you have a product that has been created for these
reasons, there's no way for it to be successful. A product must
serve the customer's needs, a new technology must offer
something superior to what's already available. You have to
offer customers a reason to abandon what they already know
and try something different. None of that is being offered here.
