Second Hand Market
After your first year (where parents are likely to be able to leand you a hand anyway), you can always "buy" your discount on the books that you need for the coming year by selling your existing books onto the next year's students. In fact, you can probably get between 1/2 and 2/3 of the cover price by doing so.

As one's likely to spend more with time (18 year-olds typically haven't had a large amount of money in their pocket as yet), the extra money will come in more useful in later years in any case!

If it's your first year, put up an advert saying that you're interested in buying books (list them). Expect to pay between 1/2 and 2/3 of the cover price, but then you have a hard copy! Given the end condition of a twice (or more!) used book, expect to sell it on for between 1/3 and 1/2 cover price when the time comes...
