Not so much a racket
---And then i also remember the professors making sure their
class had to buy a certain book, and low and behold, the
professors name was on it. It was always truely disgusting that
the professor would panhandle their books like that, but what a
racket.---

If a prof writes a textbook, you can assume it's based on his/her
course, and includes the things they think are really important to
teach. Very few authors get rich from writing textbooks, and
often they do it because they are unsatisfied with the other
books available on the subject (if there are any available).
