Been there, done that
I worked for an all digital, on-demand print shop that was contracted by McGraw Hill to print college text books. We'd scan in the original text and could deliver up to 10,000 copies delivered anywhere to the US within 10 days. The final cost to produce a book was something like 1/2 cent per page. A little more if they wanted color covers. Even cheaper for re-prints. And they still charged $100 or more per book to students.

Books are more useful when they are printed. Major campuses should setup their own on-demand print shops and sell the books for $20 each. But publishers won't give up the rights.

Once a book is digitized, converting to the latest and greatest file format is no problem. Reprints are no problem too. Bandwidth isn't exactly cheap. Printing still can be.
