Longevity
One question unanswered by all of this--how long will these
archives last? Will the file formats used still be useable in 20
years? Let's say you did this process in 1985, using the standard
file formats of the day. How many would you be able to open
using your laptop today? If they're spending years converting
everything now, are they going to spend more years in the future
converting everything to each successive file form or technology
that arises?

Ink on paper is still a superb interface medium, especially when
one considers longevity. We have documents that date back
thousands of years (including some ink on papyrus documents).
Is a DVD disc really going to last 1,000 years?
