They may suvive and here is why.
AOL business for years was based on American tolerance and rather lower level of demand for quality by people. Yes that's right and I say that as demanding European living in the USA for past ten years. When I hear people telling me about quality and improvement here I just nod and keep quiet to avoid criticism of their visions. Simply I do not want to disturb their "positive thinking".

Simply Amercians are driven by marketing that wraps different grade products into a nice box. Some of those products are cheap garbage producing goods or services that break and people live replacing with new once without a complaint and what is more important ACCEPTING THE FACT EASILY. Based on that behavior of acceptance of the fact that something breaks easily I bet that many people will live with limps and bumps pronounced as something not working and poor support... something you get from AOL alike companies.

You have to rememeber that AOL targets average and not demanding customers... just like Toyota, Microsoft, GM and a few others. They win on volume, but never on quality (yes Toyota had their best years and they are still good, but not as good as engineering at a few other car manufacturers of higher profile).

A good example of what happens is DaimlerChrysler. Chrysler had good channels and except Jeep they've always had mediocre quality cars comparing to Japaneese or European. Daimler on the other hand had excelent quality, but their market was different and they could not reach another level. Well apprently people are not as demanding and quality costs... and costs a lot. Now you have DaimlerChrysler so the joint company can lower their taxes and have bigger market, but as far as quality... I would go with those cars if they were 100% built in Europe or Japan (and that is what I ordered when buying another brand car: BMW... from Munich and not from South Africa wher majority of BMW cars are built for American market).

So looking at quality of housing (those wooden shacks with drywalls eaten by bugs by the time you will have paid mortgage and ugly like hell, cheap vinyl sidings) you may want to educate people on quality and style. Until then such things like AOL will meet their bottom line using simply phenomenon called globalization (And based on poverty of other regions of the world). Treat yourself as demanding customer and pain in the neck until you receive exactly what you want or be treated by marketing BS and those who live on high level thank to your ignorance as you deserve.

Marketing does not mean customer relationship. In fact many of those companies are more focused on their bottom line rather than on long standing relationship. Well if they could lock a customer that would be perfect.
