Can you prove that?
---Historically it has been the CD/Record sales for artists that
make money---

Really? I can find lots of evidence to the contrary:

But the argument of record companies standing up for artists
rights is such a load of hooey. Most artists see nothing from
record sales -- it's not an evil conspiracy, it's just the way the
accounting works. That's the way major record labels are set up,
from a purely pragmatic point of view. So as far as the artist
goes -- who cares? I don't see much money from record sales
anway, so I don't really care how people are getting it.

Bands don't usually make money from their record labels. The
press has written for decades of top-selling, major-label pop
stars forced to live on $15,000 per year.

Musicians typically make money from:

Live performances (i.e.: concerts)
Selling CDs, posters and t-shirts at concerts

One of the first aspects you have to realize about getting a label
deal is that in the current business climate getting signed to a
major or large indie label does not necessarily mean that you are
going to be wealthy and famous. One aspect is that with a
record label - particularly the majors - there are too many ways
the pie hatoo many wasy the CD sales pie has to be split with
only the tiniest percentage of it usually goes to the artist. Of
course there are other ways that a label band can make money,
including concerts, merchandising and publishing, but you are
going to have to divide that up with the label in most cases as
well.
