They care
Right now, their main issue is maintaining control. If they let
artists find out that they are much better off without a record
company, they're in trouble. If they don't strictly control what
you can and can't hear on the radio, they're in trouble (which is
why they went to so much effort to kill off internet radio
stations).

But they do want the extra income from online sales. It's just a
lower priority from maintaining an iron fist control over the
market. At some point they'll jump into the waters, just like,
after trying to get the VCR outlawed, the MPAA joined the video
tape business.
