It's not the physical expression of the song that's copyrighted, it's the sequence of notes. Just like in a book it's the sequence of words, not the book itself, that's copyrighted. That's why you can't lift the text of a book word-for-word and avoid copyright violation.

However you transform the song, it still has the same sequence of notes when you listen to it. That's what is copyrighted.
