Copyright Needs Reform ... Badly
I agree ... copyright is necessary for people to get their stuff out into the public domain. It offers protection from others who might claim that a piece of work is their own, even when they didn't create it. And it still works that way with small things ... for example, if I write a book or a song.

However, when you are talking about mass distribution, things change. There isn't a publishing house, record company, movie producer or software maker that won't force you to sell them the rights BEFORE your stuff gets mass distributed.

That's why I think that so many people thumb their noses at copyright. More often than not, it's misused by BIG business because they own the supply chains and can easily cut the air supply off from your creation.

Or, they might make a similar product and then demand that you are the original creator of the product. Unless you have millions sitting around, you can't fight it.

Not to mention that you can't prosecute somebody creating bootlegs in a foreign country, using your own local copyright law.

Reform is needed. But the people involved don't know enough about how technology works to be drafting this type of legislation. At least, that's what I get from the story.
