Amazons patent is junk, read 6,029,141, its about quoting card number *******1234 (only showing a subset of credit card numbers to stop the credit card number being stolen, obvious non invention done often before the patent was applied for).
If Cendent were European without a US base they wouldn't have this problem because business process and software can't be patented. So no minor patent can be used to stop a major invention.
