Profiting makes you more visible
Also profiting links more directly to one person or company.

That's why selling copied tapes back in the 80s and 90s got you into trouble but being part of tape trading group went virtually unnoticed.

Now you have the internet which allows for the same trading but you also have software developers making software to make this trading easier in which they can profit. This shines a spot light on the whole issue of trading MP3s.

Fileswapping was occuring on mass before Napster using email, FTP, websites, newgroups and chat programs. This didn't seem to be an issue till a centralized service to facilitate the trading became popular and profit was to made by selling software and advertising for the purposes of trading files.
