much ado about quite a bit...
most of it to do with the non existent amount of trust between a lot of member states and the US in particular and everyone else in general.

Politics and nationalism does tend to bring out the ugly side in people all over the globe unfortunately.

This looks to have been mishandled a little right from the beginning. Instead of baldy coming out and stating that "we will not relinquish control of the internet" (pretty much guaranteed to get other peoples backs up right from the get-go) it might have been more sensible to work on making ICANN and its make-up more robust. Institute a charter and method of comprising the committee so that no country or group of countries can make radical changes to the current system. It would have been the perfect time to do it because, like it or not, the US does have oversight of ICANN at the moment.

Done with a little bit of flair, a dash of tact and some creative forward thinking the US could then have announced that of course it was going to allow ICANN to become an independant body and thus get back a little (badly needed) cred as a team player.

The resultant body probably would have been slow, cumbersome and less flexible (remind you of anything??) but it would have the mantel of "global acceptance" and would stave off the Balkanisation of the net for for a while longer.
