Microsoft does NOT want cross platform applications to be useful
They add features to their browser ONLY when it is a reason for people to use an alternative browser. They would love to put a stake through the heart of the browser so people would use proprietary web technology in Longhorn when it arrives.

Firefox forces a change of plans.
