Why doesn't MS license their own codec?
If so, then it's surprising that MS doesn't license their own codec.
What's the point of making WMP for the Mac if they aren't going to
use their own technology? Wouldn't this help the spread of WMP?

And note that your plan requires a third party to license something
expensive from MS for the movie business to work (not to mention
the expense of building the actual player), whereas using
Quicktime, which is already available for Mac, Windows and Linux,
would require no extra expense.
