osreinstall: See, we're not that far apart.
I'm fully aware of the fact that Microsoft can stop on a dime, give ya nine cents change, and roar off in another direction on the track, dragging their users screaming behind them.

I'm also aware that, if you let them, MS will make sure that ALL of the tools at the track ONLY work on the the "Windows Racer" (The "Standard"). If you want to so much as change a tire on your car, you're going to have to get the "Fans in the Stands" (The Users) to get up out of their seats to help you; they can't just sit there and enjoy the show. And you won't be able to get many others (Competition) to join you because they are going to see that the inside track to Victory Lane is slanted towards the Windows Racer.

Also, the second that the Windows Racer Team sees the "other cars on the track" (software makers, proprietary AND OSS) getting too close, they'll just change the "tool standards" to something only they know about (proprietary stuff, you know, they can do that) and leave everybody else in the dust once more.

It doesn't matter whether if I'm making excellent OSS stuff which could blow MS stuff into the weeds: it will never get off the starting line with good enough times to compete effectively if MS owns the secret formula.

I've got to watch MS like a hawk and make sure they don't get their sneaky little rules standards on the books or I've lost before I even get my car out on the track.
