osreinstall, I think you're missing the business paradigm, here.
Microsoft is like a wire made of one, big, single piece of copper. Break it or compromise the integrity of it in any way and you've just lost your connection (read: your business, your infrastructure, etc.), and it's going to cost you bucks to reestablish it. Microsoft has proven it works this way, just recently, with their dropping of certain types of support for their older OSes.

Open Source is like a stranded wire made of many different pieces of copper. One of them can be compromised, or broken, and you still have your connection. Red Hat could go belly up tomorrow but Linux would still be around, supported by many others. Or SuSE could decide they are not going to support Open-Xchange anymore and the army of folks around the world who work on it would still be there, supporting and improving it.
