First you must understnad just how big WalMart is. Take Microsoft, IBM, H.P., Dell, Cisco, and Google and add their total annual sales and together they don't equal the size of WalMart in dollar sales. (or profit margins). Last year they were the first company in history to record a 1/4 TRILLION dollars in sales.
WalMart has single handly destroyed more US manufactures than any of the above companies could ever hope to. How so you ask?
WalMart makes no bones about telling manufactures that if they want to sell products in WalMart stores they MUST close their US operations and move to Asia, preferably China in order to be "competitive" on wages and benefits.
In more than one instance WalMart has been caught red handed in working with China to sell goods below the cost of manufacutring (dumping) with one goal in mind, the elimination of US manufacturing.
Need an example, in 1994 Rubbermaid was on the magzine of Fortune magazine as the top company in the US. They had great products, a great reputation, and excellent customer relations. A couple of years later the cost of resins (used to make plastic anything) went through the roof. (Resin is made from oil.) When Rubbermaid said they had no choice but to pass along the costs WalMart black balled tehm. In essence they said fire all your American employees, eat the cost of the resin increase, and hire Asia workers to make up the difference. Rubbermaid tried to act honorable to the thousands of employees and for their effort they went broke. Take a guess who came walking in to the auction to buy all their manufacturing equipment? Yup, China...
To put it into perspective, WalMart is China's number one customer for ALL exports. WalMart buys products to resell from 7000 customers, 85% of them are in China and the number is growing.
But how does that harm me, I like the low prices you say. True enough, but your job at some point relies upon having customers with money in hand to buy your product or service. Take away the manufacturing base and these people no longer have a job or the money to buy your employers product. That means in a short time you are unemployed and to broke to shop, even at WalMart... - Posted by: No_Ax_to_Grind Posted on: 06/16/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
