If you are talking the Sun Java VM, it is the same for both
You should try to verify the VM you are using in each case. I think you can still download the old MS VM, and there may be sites still written to that VM. Of course IE 4 browsers ran the MS VM by default, which was what most developers tested against, and therefore worked best with.

And, as you point out, Microsofts strategy of making things incompatible and appearing to work best on Microsoft platforms has been VERY successfull. People like you just shrug their shoulders and keep on using Windows/IE. Nobody said the people at Microsoft were stupid.
