Who uses unix or pays for Linux. Yes you can pay for a distro and get tech support but most you can readily download for free.

As far as Apple they may have got it right in OS X by switching to a unix kernal but they will remain relativly unsuccessful for the same reason they did in the past.

Most companies want to be either hardware or software apple wants to be both. When you have the os manufacturer determining the hardware in a computer it is limiting to the end user. Upgrades are more limited and they can charge a premium for the equipment since they monopolize the complete computer package.
