The community
If you are to be a premier member of the community, you must distinguish yourself with GOOD works. Apple was in the "player" role - where you look good, but you're just a TAKER. Well Apple's reputation in the OSS community started to take a dive - as ALL player's reputations do when they are found out. Most players move on to another community once they have been exposed, and continue their ways somewhere else. Apple did NOT have this opportunity - there ARE no more OSS communities! There's just one - and you have to build and defend your reputation - lest you lose face. Apple looks like it has learned its lesson, and is eager to get back in the community's good graces.
