Did intelligent thinking lead to a business model that works?
I like to congratulate the recording industry executive that after months for my incessant complaining about changing your business model, figured out the answer to the question, "why should I pay for something I can get for free over the internet."

The answers are as follows:

1. Because searching for files on the free sites is a pain. Sometimes it's almost impossible to find what you're looking for, especially if it's obscure.

2. File transfers aren't guaranteed to work every time, especially on large downloads. If your peer drops you, your transfer ends.

3. File quality can be hit or miss.

What does a pay site have to offer?

1. Full catalogs. If it's been published, it's available for download. Even that Pixies cd I've been looking for.

2. Dedicated servers mean no disconnects.

3. Quality recordings.

The next step is for the RIAA marketers to write this down, get up off their lazy butts and put together a strategy for promoting their business. Note that this new strategy does not involve suing your customer which will undoubtedly sadden your legal department. Don't worry, they'll get over it.
