I find your post hard to believe.
I use firefox for everything:
Ebay
Amazon
My Bank
Zdnet
Slashdot
My Retirement Site
Both my credit card companies
Many many other sites...

It works correctly.
I haven't gotten ONE virus or spyware since I started using Firefox before release 1. And I go to some of the wilder woolier sites on the internet.
I have gotten two "browser helper" viruses at work and I do NOT go any place wild and wooly on my work computer. One of them took tech three HOURS to get rid of and I found two more processes the next day that took me another couple hours to get rid of
(As an aside for those stuck with one of these,
1) Look for files updated in the last minute.
2) you write protect the suspicious files
3) the processes will die and then you can uninstall the process and delete the files)
.

In addition, the FREE adblocking utilities which kill flash and "popovers" and "floating obscuring panels" work wonderfully. I have nice white holes with the same layout- but no annoying ads.

So I can't see how Firefox isn't superior to IE in everyway except running windows update where it is required.
