- What would the internet look like if the UN had managed it's creation?
-
"It would not be acceptable to have decisions taken that are perceived to benefit corporate or national interests."
So, you would rather turn the decisions over to a large group of dictators, than have a small group of democracies in control? Take a look at which countries the UN has in line to manage this; what percentage of that committe has freedom of expression? Everyone has "national interests", it really comes down to who's interests you want to follow. Cuba, China, Saudi Arabia, etc all have brutal repression of speech/thought at the core of their national interest. Is your concern that there isn't enough of this kind of interest involved with the internet today?
I'd likely agree with your general line of thought if the UN:
1) Wasn't hopelessly corrupt.
2) Didn't define democracy as "One dictator, one vote".
I'm all for international bodies regulating international areas, but given the choice of one that places the emphasis on the values of countries like Taiwan, Austraila, Western Europe, the US, etc over the values of Cuba, North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, etc. it is a no brainer for me. I'll take democracy over totalitarianism any day.
I'm assuming you live in a society like the ones I prefer, and not the ones you want to give greater influence to. If not, I hope you are watching your back while posting your opinions on the internet. - Posted by: enduser_z Posted on: 06/05/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
