Net control
I cannot argue the accusation of corruption made against the UN but we have seen enough evidence of the corruptibility of corporations over the last few decades to be less than happy about the idea of surrendering our freedoms on the web to their care.
If you would like to convince me that a powerful US corporation will operate without attempting undue influence on a US presidency to further its corporate goals, or that such a corporation would be free of influence or pressure applied by a US presidency then perhaps I could feel comfortable about ICANN's role. Then again, you could probably also sell me the Brooklyn Bridge.
