BitTorrent is absolutely the best thing around for downloading new Linux ISOs, OpenOffice.org versions, Mozilla versions, etc.

If the files you want are hosted at a very high-capacity site, you won't necessarily see a speed improvement. Then again, I've noticed that lately sites that used to scream are bogging down so speed may well be an advantage.

However, even if you don't get a speed advantage out of using BT, you have a moral advantage: you're at least "giving back" some of the bandwidth cost of distributing software libre. Put another way, you're being considerate of the hosts by not loading them down, thus reducing their costs which they have graciously assumed for your benefit.
