And that's a tiny part of a tiny market
---This will change the non-iTunes market---

Agreed, but you're talking, at best, 30% of a market that's less
than 2% of the total music sales market. So no big deal.

---The big question is how Real and
Napster will respond - and can they afford to respond and
remain in the business.---

So far they've shown they're willing to lose money hand over fist
and remain in business. What's another 10 or 20 million dollars?
It's not their money anyway, sorry investors.

---It does, however, add pressure on Apple to
introduce subscription services for the iPod - something I
believe they are prepared to do in terms of product
development.---

I doubt it. There's been no evidence that this is something the
public wants. Do you really want to rent music rather than own
it? Let's say you spend $10 a month renting from Yahoo and
$10 a month at iTunes. Then there's a month when you're short
on cash, or there's no new music out there that you want. The
short month, with Yahoo, you don't spend the $10 and you can
listen to zero music all month. With iTunes, you can keep
listening to all the songs you bought. Ditto the month with no
new music, with Yahoo, you have to lay out $10 to keep hearing
the same old stuff, that with Apple you already own.

No thanks.
