Will Microsoft bother with FireFox?
I've yet to be persuaded that Microsoft cares enough about FireFox to take action, particularly damaging FireFox performance. Staying out of court was probably one of Microsoft's main New Year's resolutions.
(The Opera dispute is about not the operating system, but web site design.)

IE 7 is nailing the security issue for IE on XP. Microsoft must have found that security sells upgrades. Also that they wanted to eliminate the years of criticism, but on their newest operating system only, so they wouldn't be hindered going forward. The same way that stability has largely disappeared as an issue.

FireFox, though. What's that to Microsoft?
The company probably thinks FireFox will be gone in a few years, maybe even before Longhorn predominates, because there's not much (profit) motive for people to stay with it.
