We're using Linux in production.
We're a mainframe, UNIX, Novell, and Windows shop.

Stuff is being pulled off our mainframe and put into the UNIX environment due to costs and retirements.

We have over 300 UNIX boxes, and our Linux environment is growing more rapidly than everything else combined. Within a year our Linux environment will out grow the rest of the environment because of the cost savings on the hardware alone.

Linux is everywhere at our fortune 150. We learned recently that some embedded systems that we have throughout our environment are indeed Linux based and for good reason.

Linux in our environment is growing faster than any other UNIX.

Hopefully our HP-UX (there should be an "s" between the P and the U), will be booted out the door. Patches that require reboots to apply, and I love an ANSI compilers that aren't ANSI (RogueWave extensions anyone). I like the LVM commands, oddly enough the Linux LVM has very similar commands, without mapfiles and without the required mkdir and mknod commands. For one application went from an 8 way rp7410 that couldn't keep up to a quad Xeon, now running at 20% utilization. We tried an IA64, that didn't work nearly as well as the Xeon.

AIX is okay, other than the ODM. The LVM gets fun on large environment with back up servers than use things like BCVs.

Solaris is getting better, but that is too little too late. But at least Solaris is predictable.

Novell, well, they're going Linux.

Windows ... well everyone knows about that.

I think I hit all the potential O/Ss that you might be talking about, well other than MAC. Which at this time I still don't know about the server side feels like a hacked up Next step machine, it does make a pretty darn nice desktop.

So what do you think should run a corporation?

Yes, there are privace concerns, but nothing to to with Linux.  DonnieBoy | 05/08/05
Ah hah  Loverock Davidson | 05/08/05
