Who writes this stuff?
Security and protection is big to me. I would not use Gmail if I thought I was at risk.

I read that page and a few that it linked to and found nothing wrong with Gmail. Bear in mind that, with privacy being important to me, I did read all of Gmails terms of use and privacy statements in full plus their FAQ's and everything else pertinent prior to signing up.

First off, Sarbane Oxley now requires all traded corporations to hold e-mail for five years. The latest two years in real-time online accessible form, the third year in near-time near-line storage for rapid same-day retreival and the last two years available upon request.

"Upon request?" Requested by whom? The government. BTW, contrary to that website, you can delete anything from your archive and make it unavailable. No ads are placed inline in your e-mail. Your e-mail is left untouched. If you POP3 you get no ads. Ads are placed in real-time (for online viewers only) so the data is only accessed when viewing the message online. No data is collected and stored from incomming messages (besides the actual message itself that every e-mail server would save anyway so that you can read it at leisure, duh) nor used by Google in any of its services. Neither are any of your outgoing mails either. What they keep is the information provided by you in your signup to give you cross-service single sign-on and interaction similar to Yahoo! Mail, IM, Groups, etc. They just make it clear unlike Yahoo! whom refuses to give me access to my old accounts I had with other service providers before Yahoo! bought them because my sign in was already associated with an account.

I don't use Yahoo! anymore (except for my Geocities account that they screwed up claiming to make it better but in fact I lost storage space and functionality and one of my eGroups account that they also screwed up by reducing functionality and storage with the same claim of improving services) because I got sick of spam and IM's to my Yahoo services from Amber and her dodecahedraplets who go by the same name asking me if I want to see her nude pic's.

I haven't gotten one bit of spam yet in my Gmail account (unlike my once primary account that used to be spam free until one day my service provider said that they were going to improve the service and took me offline for one day and when I got back online, not only did I have reduced functionality on my accounts page and reduced storage and fewer free mailboxes and higher prices for the additional mailboxes but I immediately started getting on average 100 spam messages per day).

So bring it on. I'll use Gmail until they start spaming me and then I'll find someone else. Pity I can no longer use my Firstname@Lastname.com e-mail address. Thunderbird does a great job of filtering the spam but everytime I get a new legitimate contact I have to ensure that they are in my addressbook to keep them from being spam-filtered, or search through my spam folder for the message ("I sent it about a week ago, are you sure you didn't get my e-mail about that new drug Leroy is taking...") or hope to be lucky that it isn't spam type content.

People should read things before they write critisisms about it. At work we use Lotus Notes and Dominos and everyone has a 1GB limit on total storage and no limit (save for the total limit) on attachment sizes. I would rather have my personal mail on Google's servers than my agencies servers anyday because I can delete (and remove from archives) them on Google legally but SarbOx prevents me from doing so at work and my work e-mail is more likely to be subpoena'ed.
