Money gained on the status quo...

... is preferable to potential money on innovation to some people, no question. And there's no better example of wrongheaded resistance to change than the RIAA companies. They have been opposed to increasing their profits for many years.

That's why compulsory licensing exists. If a company attempts to restrict the market by use of IP, the law can and has forced distribution at reasonable terms. In the US at least.

So, you're right about using patents as weapons to block innovation. But that attempt can fail.
