This could be another reason to switch to Linux on the desktop.
You want to use a desktop PC to crunch numbers, you are probably requiered to pay a server license.

Actually, open source in general will benifit from this model. Imagine if you had to buy a database license for all of your desktop computers so they could participate in the grid. Imagine of all the complexity of software licensing in general for Grids. Do you pay Oracle or Microsoft for 1,000 CPUs? All of these problems go away with open source, you don't think about licenses, you just plug things together and load software as needed.
